Acupuncture’s Origins

Acupuncture is a therapy in which very fine needles are inserted into the skin at designated points chosen for their therapeutic effect. It originated in China, spreading to other parts of Asia and, eventually, the West. The earliest written record of its use goes back about 2500 years and it may be as much as 4000 years old.

Although introduced into Europe in the 17th century, the difficulties of communication and the alien nature of its underlying concepts have hampered its practice. It is only since the late 20th century with the free flow of people and ideas that came with globalisation that its practice has grown and found more widespread recognition and approval.

Use in the clinic

I practice Traditional Chinese Acupuncture according to TCM and 5 Element principles. TCM was developed in modern day China to meet a wide range of healthcare needs and is the most commonly practiced form of acupuncture around the world. 5 Element acupuncture is a more holistic approach - it is person-focused and can produce a profound sense of well-being. I combine the two approaches to form the most appropriate treatment in any given situation.

One's state of health is influenced by a wide range of factors including thoughts, emotions, habitual patterns (physical and mental), diet, exercise and lifestyle to name but a few. One of Chinese Medicine's greatest strengths is its understanding of the way in which these factors interrelate and give rise to health and disease. I will talk through my understanding of your condition from a Chinese Medical perspective and if appropriate will give advice about what lifestyle changes you can make.
